Crowns and Bridges in Airdrie

Restore Damaged Teeth and Bridge the Gaps in Your Smile

What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?

Dental crowns and bridges are two of the most reliable and commonly used restorative treatments in dentistry. A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the crowns on adjacent teeth. At Sierra Springs Dental in Airdrie, we use high-quality porcelain and ceramic materials to craft restorations that blend naturally with your smile.

When You Might Need a Crown or Bridge

Crowns Are Recommended For

  • Teeth weakened by extensive decay
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Teeth after root canal therapy
  • Large fillings that need reinforcement
  • Cosmetic improvement of misshapen teeth
  • Supporting a dental bridge

Bridges Are Recommended For

  • Replacing one or more missing teeth
  • Preventing remaining teeth from shifting
  • Restoring your bite and chewing ability
  • Maintaining natural facial shape
  • Distributing bite forces evenly
  • Patients who are not candidates for implants

Benefits of Crowns and Bridges

Reliable restorations that protect your teeth and complete your smile.

Strength and Protection

Crowns encase the entire visible portion of a damaged tooth, restoring its strength and protecting it from further fracture or decay.

Natural Appearance

Modern porcelain and ceramic crowns and bridges are custom-crafted to match the colour, shape, and translucency of your natural teeth for a seamless result.

Long-Lasting Durability

With proper care, crowns and bridges can last 10 to 15 years or longer, providing a reliable, long-term restoration for your smile.

Restore Full Function

Crowns and bridges restore your ability to chew, speak, and smile comfortably, eliminating the functional limitations caused by damaged or missing teeth.

Prevent Further Damage

By covering a weakened tooth or filling a gap left by missing teeth, crowns and bridges prevent shifting, bite problems, and additional dental issues.

Comfortable Treatment

Our team ensures a comfortable experience with local anesthesia and gentle techniques. Sedation options are available for anxious patients.

What Is Included in Your Treatment

  • An exam and digital X-rays to check the tooth, roots, and bone
  • A personalized plan that explains your options, timeline, and cost
  • Local anesthetic while the tooth is prepared
  • Digital scans or impressions to design your restoration
  • A temporary crown or bridge while your final one is made
  • A custom porcelain or ceramic restoration, shade-matched to your teeth
  • Bite adjustment and care instructions

What to Expect

  1. Consultation: your dentist examines the tooth or gap and explains your options.
  2. Preparation: the tooth is numbed and gently shaped. For a bridge, the teeth on each side of the gap are prepared.
  3. Scans and temporary: your teeth are scanned, and a temporary crown or bridge is placed.
  4. Final placement: at your second visit, your custom restoration is checked for fit, colour, and bite, then permanently bonded.

Most crowns and bridges are completed in two visits. The area is fully numbed, so most patients feel only pressure, and sedation options are available if you feel anxious.

Caring for Your Crown or Bridge

Brush twice a day and floss daily, using a floss threader or water flosser to clean under a bridge. Avoid chewing ice, pens, or very hard foods, and wear a night guard if you grind your teeth. Mild sensitivity for a few days after placement is normal. Regular dental checkups and cleanings help your restoration last as long as possible.

Related Treatments

  • Root canal treatment: often followed by a crown to protect the tooth
  • Dental fillings: repair smaller areas of decay without a crown
  • Dental implants: a fixed option that does not rely on neighbouring teeth
  • Porcelain veneers: a cosmetic option for the front surface of healthy teeth

Cost of Crowns and Bridges

The cost depends on the number of teeth involved, the material used, and whether the tooth needs other treatment first, such as a root canal. A bridge that replaces a missing tooth usually costs more than a single crown because it involves more than one tooth.

Sierra Springs Dental follows the Alberta Dental Association fee guide and bills most insurance plans directly. Crowns and bridges may be partly covered under CDCP and NIHB for eligible patients, and flexible payment plans are available. Contact us for a personalized quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about dental crowns and bridges.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance. Crowns are often used after a root canal, for cracked teeth, or for teeth with large fillings.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by attaching an artificial tooth to crowns placed on the teeth on either side of the gap. It is fixed in place and cannot be removed like a denture.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

With proper care, crowns and bridges can last 10 to 15 years or longer. Good oral hygiene, regular checkups, and avoiding very hard foods all help them last.

Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan cover crowns?

Crowns may be covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan for eligible patients when they are needed for your oral health, and some treatments may require approval before they begin. Our team can help you understand your CDCP coverage before treatment.

When would I need a crown vs. a filling?

A filling works well for small to medium cavities. A crown is recommended when a tooth is cracked, heavily decayed, has a very large filling, or has had a root canal, because it covers and protects the whole tooth.
